The new Ram 1500 EV is a pickup truck set to be released two years from now. Despite the late announcement, it is worth waiting for Ram’s electric version of their full-size pickup. If you are planning to switch to electric, the EV version of the Ram 1500 is definitely one to consider.

Here are some things that make the Ram EV truck stand out from the rest.

Design

Ram’s EV full-size truck has a unibody vibe, but Inside EVs confirmed that the electric pickup will ride on the STLA Frame. Ram will continue to use the body-on-frame construction for the electric vehicle platform. However, the electric version of the 1500 pickup will feature a dual-cab structure. Most automakers choose to create their first electric pickup with a high-volume configuration because of its improved safety.

MotorTrend interviewed Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares and asked about the bolder styling of the new Ram EV. Don’t be surprised to see a few truck accessories with unusual designs. The CEO said they want the electric Ram 1500 to look different from the standard trucks on sale today.

The brand’s goal is that the EV will stand out on its own. Tavares knows there will be loyal Ram buyers who will hesitate to buy because of the altered appearance, but some truck lovers will like the new look and powertrain. The all-electric Ram 1500 shows a futuristic design in its RAM branding at the front and rear.

Based on the rendered teasers, it will have an illuminated logo of the brand at the front end, along with signature lights that are contoured like a bottle. At the rear, there’s a bright brand inscription and inverted L-shaped taillights. The design of the wheels is not yet included in the teaser.

Most pickup trucks with internal combustion engines (ICE) have a higher ground clearance and a taller cab design. The windshield is made steeper in the Ram EV with a lower roofline. It is one of the noticeable design features compared to the gas-powered counterpart.

The truck has a bowed A-Pillar and steeply raked windshield, which creates a more aerodynamic design than the traditional gas-powered model. The truck’s sides also have more curves than we usually see on older models. Despite the difference in the front-end design, the EV version will look just as tough as the standard pickup truck.

The running lights on the EV’s upper and lower edges of its headlamps have a technical design, which adds unique road presence and flair to the overall front-end appearance. The conventional upper grille has been replaced with a dark-covered panel. The newly designed panel covers the area to improve aerodynamics. It still has no specific details on the fender flares and other truck parts.

Efficiency

The 2024 Ram 1500 EV does not rely on gas to operate, which is excellent for the environment. It also means that it’s much more efficient than traditional gas-powered trucks, so you’ll save money on fuel costs in the long run, especially now that the fuel prices are rapidly increasing.

Only a few details about the features of the Ram 1500 EV when the teasers were released, but the parent company Stellantis has given hints. The electric pickup may get firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) upgrades that can help improve efficiency and performance throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle. According to the SVP for Software Business & Product of Stellantis, Mamatha Chamarthi, they suggested software-enabled performance upgrades will be available after the delivery.

Towing

There’s no exact data on the Ram 1500 EV’s towing and payload ratings. Even though Dodge still did not divulge specific figures for its electric truck’s maximum tow rating, they promised that the Ram EV would pull more than its rivals.

Currently, Ford’s F-150 Lightning has the maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds, among other contenders for all-electric pickups. The brand has not yet revealed a better number on the payload capacity and towing performance. But fans do not have to worry because the max ratings might exceed the top performer.

Powertrain

Compared to other rival automakers, Ram is a bit late in creating its version of electric trucks. But it’s better late than sorry. There are speculations that Ram will make up for its tardiness and create all-electric vehicles with impeccable features.

You might notice that most electric-powered vehicles in the market today are battery-electric vehicles (BEV) and hybrids. Ram wants to widen the variety and plans to build heavy-duty electric trucks. For fleet customers, Dodge will still offer Ram HDs with fuel cells. This move will allow the fleet customers to refuel in a short time (about four minutes) in their depots.

The fuel cell technology already exists and can be seen in large commercial vans for brands such as Citroen, Peugeot, and Opel in Europe. The United States will also get an inventory as Stellantis wishes to be the undisputed leader in commercial vehicles.

Range and tech features

Ram has said that the 1500 truck will have a driving range of up to 500 miles. That is a whopping 200 miles longer than Ford F-150 Lightning, which is currently the all-electric truck with the highest range.

The promised 500-mile range is an improvement compared to the current longest-range EV on the market. However, Ram’s announcement did not mention particular towing numbers. According to some car blogs, Ram’s EV truck may offer the capability of onboard power wherein you can charge up your devices, as well as a more advanced automated driving technology.

Charging and Battery Life

The Ram may build the 1500 EV truck to accept fast-charging rates of up to 150 kWh and a navigation system that can help drivers plan routes based on the availability of charging stations and the truck’s predicted range. Ram hinted at plug-in hybrid vehicles in their promotional video, although it didn’t say which models would use the particular technology.

Joining the EV truck war

Some of the most popular electric vehicles have already started selling their EV versions. Tesla’s uncanny Cybertruck is different from the conventional pickup design but has an estimated one million reservations. Ford’s all-electric F-150 model has 200,000 reservations, while Chevy’s EV model has 140,000 reservations.

Ram announced that it would join its pickup-war rivals in creating an electric version of their popular full-size pickup models. During the Stellantis’ EV Day, Ram said it would produce an EV version of the 1500 pickup truck set to release in 2024.

Many analysts think that Ram is feeling a massive pressure to electrify their vehicles as there is a growing audience for electric trucks and SUVs. According to Green Car Reports, more than 100 EV models will be available in the automotive market of the United States.

Ram is up for the challenge and promises to deliver a fantastic electric version of its popular 1500 truck model. Stay tuned for more updates on this much-anticipated pickup, and get to know additional exciting information about the 2024 Ram 1500 EV.
